But I can't say for sure. Hybrid drives confuse me. I don't know how it would be partitioned for PS4. If you can load just the OS to the SSD, you will notice faster boot times, but largely unchanged loading times. I can't read the article work network , but last time I checked, the SSDs were just a couple of millimeters too big to fit the PS4. Has to be less than 12mm [citation needed].
But unless you can decide what specifically goes into the SSD on a Hybrid Drive, then you won't see much of a difference. I already owned LMSH on the and 8 bucks was certainly cheap enough to fire it up at any convenience. I've bought a few games on the cheap for that very reason.
And primarily on the PS3 because MS's stupid insistence on ripping off customers on hard drives and on the Vita, that's Sony too. Something else is going on. It is definitely not worth the SSD premium at this time. As for disc vs download. I still prefer to have the physical box and disc. It depends on the price. There seem to be fewer discounts on the digital versions so far. I haven't heard of any hybrid drives where you actually have access to the solid-state portion of the drive.
Instead that's abstracted away and only the drive controller knows about it. It's the drive controller that's responsible for determining what should be mirrored onto the solid-state portion of the drive based on access frequency.
Think of a hybrid drive as a standard drive with much larger cache than a non-hybrid drive. So a game that doesn't use the same assets with high frequency won't really benefit that much from a hybrid. That allows you to have a larger cache SSD than you would otherwise have in a prepackaged hybrid drive.
All download so far. I have no desire for disc games anymore. I'll probably end up with some eventually if I'm buying an older game and it's cheaper that way, but that's pretty much the only reason for me.
I don't resell games. I don't have any desire to keep cases anymore. Bandwidth isn't a concern for me. Evan E wrote: Disc - minimizes the possibility of server closures and the inevitable hard drive deaths taking my game from me. Well, both MS and Sony let you redownload, so hard drive deaths aren't really a concern.
Yes there's a chance that the stores will get shut down, but I only see that happening in a situation where the console is already dead. I figure that by that point, I either won't care about playing these games anymore, or I can buy them on disc for super cheap.
I don't see any reason to buy the less convenient form factor now to account for this kind of risk. Besides, it's not like discs are immune to loss You're not describing a hybrid drive. A hybrid drive appears as a single drive - the drive controller is constantly swapping recently-used data to the SSD, on the assumption that you'll be re-using that data. You don't have any input over that with a hybrid; to you, and the computer using it, it just looks like one drive.
In the case of a PS4, the solid state part of a hybrid drive will probably wind up containing the OS, since you use that every time you boot up, and data from the most recent game you played. So rebooting that game will be slightly faster, but booting up a new game won't show any benefit. I just grabbed an article at random; there's a number of comparisons out there, showing basically the same thing.
It's definitely not worth the price premium on an SSD; Sony designed the PS4 with a spinning drive in mind, and it simply doesn't have the bus bandwidth to take advantage of an SSD. We have it here too and call it the Australia Tax. Disc, because I am a sucker for collector editions.
And discs tend to be on sale more. Thanks for the heads up. Time to get Best Buy to price match it. PS4 disc or download games? DRE Louis XVI. Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius et Subscriptor. Ars Legatus Legionis et Subscriptor. Ars Scholae Palatinae et Subscriptor.
